New colleague – Peter Manning

My name is Pete Manning and I’ve recently started as an Associate Professor in Global Change Ecology here at Biological Sciences. My position is linked to the Centre for Sustainable Area Management (CESAM) initiative.

I’m originally from the United Kingdom, but before moving to Bergen I worked as a group leader at the Senckenberg Biodiversity and Climate Research Centre in Frankfurt, Germany. Here, I conducted research into the relationships between land use, biodiversity, ecosystem functioning and ecosystem services, particularly in grasslands and forests. This typically involves a combination of interdisciplinary collaboration with data synthesis and modelling.

The focus of my research has historically been on plant communities, but recently I have worked other taxa including microorganisms and invertebrates, and sometimes work at the level of entire communities and ecosystems. I have also expanded my work to include the human component, in a social-ecological systems approach. I look forward to working with many of you in applying these approaches to new challenges here at Bergen in the years ahead.
