New member of staff – Tianyuan Wang

Hello, I am Tianyuan and am quite happy to be in Bergen and join in such a big community. While ever been to Finland for a short exchange program during my undergraduate, I have never been to Norway before, and would be interested in anything interesting hidden in this city (perhaps and sometimes, under the cloudy and foggy weather).

Together with our team, I am working on a paleoenvironmental reconstruction project Laschamps-UV in PalaeoChem Research Group, as a postdoctoral research fellow. The main work for me is about quantifying chemical signals – the ultraviolet absorbing compounds (UACs) in fossil spores and pollen grains isolated from lake sediments, which may be dated back to ~42,000 – 41,000 years ago. One major hypothesis about these chemical signals is that they could be indicators of past UV levels, and we can therefor reconstruct the UV scenario during one of the major geomagnetic reversal event – the Laschamps Geomagnetic Excursion. With potential findings of this project, we could evaluate relationships between UV radiation and diverse changes in climate, vegetation and animals.

I am always looking forward to communicating with anyone for idea sharing, even though our disciplines are less overlapped. It is also inspiring for me to meet more colleagues in BIO. You can find me in the office 3B06, 4th floor (A-side) of Biologen.
