HSE update: Waste sorting at BIO- what you need to know

The HSE handbook has been updated with guidelines for waste management at the BIO. This information is available under Work and safety in the laboratory at BIO | Department of Biological Sciences (BIO) | UiB

At Marineholmen, waste handling procedures vary depending on which building you are located in. It is important to note that sorting routines at BIO differ from those commonly used at home. To ensure correct waste disposal, all staff and students are encouraged to complete the e-learning course New E-learning Course on Waste Sorting at UiB | UiB Sustainability | UiB.

Additional information about the various waste fractions can be found on the HSE portal under Waste sorting at recycling stations | The HSE-gateway | UiB.

Food waste containers have now been placed in most shared lunch areas throughout the buildings, and this waste is managed by the cleaning staff. Feedback from Coor indicates that the system is functioning well. In some areas, other sorting bins are available on certain floors, although this is not consistent across all locations.

In the coming weeks, an inspection will be carried out to assess the waste recycling bins currently in place in our buildings and to identify potential for more. The goal is to improve the sorting of residual waste in our facilities. All waste disposed of in standard recycling bins is handled by the cleaning staff.

One of the challenges at Marineholmen is that UiB has an ongoing agreement with GC Rieber for waste management. The current solutions are poorly adapted to the needs of users and cleaning staff and present practical difficulties carry collected waste to the Miljøstasjonen and to the parking lot at Bioblokken.
