On December 3, 2025, the University of Bergen will host the symposium Africa–Europe Research Collaborations at Nygårdsgaten 5, Storsalen, from 09:00 to 14:00. The event is organized in partnership with the Coimbra Group university network and the Southern African–Nordic Centre (SANORD), with contributions from Western Norway University of Applied Sciences. The symposium will be streamed live, and registration closes on November 20 at 12:00.
The program draws inspiration from the Africa Charter for Transformative Research Collaborations, with a keynote by Professor Isabella Aboderin (University of Bristol) and commentary from Professor Bjørn Enge Bertelsen (UiB). The event will showcase collaborative projects from European universities, including UiB’s own initiatives, and feature a dedicated session on research collaboration with Sudan.
Early career perspectives will be shared by PhD candidate Felicity Atieno Okoth (UiB), followed by presentations from the Coimbra Group’s Global Partnerships Working Group. The day concludes with a panel debate on the future of Africa–Europe research partnerships, chaired by Professor Lise Rakner (UiB), and closing remarks from Sarah-Marleen Dannenberg of the Coimbra Group.
The symposium is part of UiB’s strategic focus on Global Challenges, one of its three priority areas, and aims to foster inclusive, equitable, and impactful research collaboration across continents.
