For BIO, teaching is one of our core activities. Facilitating students’ completion of their planned studies in the best possible way is a significant part of our social mission. It’s about more than numbers and finances—it’s about creating a learning environment where each student feels a sense of belonging and community, which fosters the best possible conditions for academic exploration and development. Research on teaching clearly shows that when students feel connected to their peers, instructors, and the academic community, they are far more likely to succeed both academically and personally.

At BIO, we have focused on developing our teaching practices for many years, with bioCEED being a central driving force. Through a commitment to student-active teaching, we have aimed to highlight teaching methods that encourage engagement, critical thinking, and collaboration in the classroom. BIO has traditionally excelled in this through teaching formats that include field courses, cruises, and laboratory exercises. In recent years, we have also seen an increasing number of courses where teaching methods have been adapted to our goal of more active learning. By actively involving students in the learning process, we not only enhance their understanding of biological concepts but also equip them with the tools to take ownership of their education.

Moving forward, it will also be essential to re-evaluate our exam formats. We know that assessment shapes how students learn, and by offering varied and well-considered exams that go beyond simple memorization, we help students develop skills that will be valuable long after graduation. Research clearly shows that moving away from the traditional high-stakes end-of-term exam—for example, by increasing the use of partial assessments throughout the semester—can increase students’ completion rates. At BIO, it is important to keep the focus on our teaching, especially now that the bioCEED project has concluded. This is vital for our students and for how BIO will continue to grow as a leading institute in teaching. This year’s teachers’ retreat is scheduled for December 2-3, and I’m truly looking forward to productive discussions and conversations!

As we approach the end of 2024, invitations have been sent out for this year’s holiday party, which will be held on Monday, November 25, right next door at Lanternen. We look forward to a festive atmosphere, delicious food from Søtt + Salt, and perhaps a bit of entertainment 😊, to celebrate the holiday season. I hope as many as possible will take this opportunity to gather with great colleagues at BIO. I’m very much looking forward to it!

Have a great weekend!
