OPINION: Appeal – Stortinget must put the knowledge to work to stop the loss of nature

[Our translation]

Dear colleague,
These days, Norway’s plan to follow up the nature agreement, the Norwegian Action Plan for Natural Diversity, is being discussed in the Storting. Our expectation for this plan was that it should not only describe the status of Norwegian nature, but also take this knowledge seriously by proposing the necessary measures to slow down and reverse the loss of nature and natural resources in Norway. Unfortunately, that expectation was not fulfilled.
Unfortunately, the Norwegian action plan lacks the concrete effective, measurable and time-bound measures needed to reduce and reverse negative impacts. This means that we will continue to reduce nature’s ability to deliver the goods and services we depend on, and increase the risk of particularly dangerous outcomes for society and the population.

But it is still not too late – now the plan will be considered by Stortinget, and then there is an opportunity for the plan to be upgraded and the ambitions to be sharpened!

As researchers involved in knowledge processes in support of nature policy development, we have written an appeal in which we ask that the Storting be aware of its responsibility. We are now inviting other professionals and professionals committed to nature to sign the petition with us. And we would love to have you along!

Feel free to tell us about your roles and commitment to nature in the comments section of the appeal – this helps to give us weight and breadth.

Thanks in advance for your support!

On behalf of the 25 naturalists behind the appeal,
