In April 2025, the biotechnology company Colossal Biosciences claimed that they had brought the dire wolf back to life – a species that became extinct over 12,000 years ago. At the same time, cloned black-footed ferrets in the United States are giving new hope, and fresh genes, to a highly inbred and endangered population. But has the dire wolf been resurrected? Can cloning really save species from extinction, or even give us mammoths back on the tundra? And what about humans? In this exciting breakfast talk, zoologist and communicator Petter Bøckman guides us through what cloning is, and what it absolutely is not. Along the way, woolly mice, dire wolves and mammoths appear, but most of all it is a story about the possibilities and clear limitations of science.
