Project details
We are seeking to recruit a Senior Res. Ass. to work on the Solent Sea Angling Competition project which will develop ecological and citizen science methods to generate long-term data to help manage five data-poor species/groups (sea bass, black sea bream, skates & rays, tope and smooth hound) in the UK.Relevant ecological data are needed to make evidence-based decisions, however, collecting these data requires significant investment (people and money). Our project will use the annual Solent Sea Angling Classic (https://www.seaanglingclassic.com/) utilising geolocated images of each fish caught (taken by the teams). The SRA will collate morphometric/ activity data, perform targeted sampling (e.g. DNA) and undertake habitat surveys of the fished areas. Together, these will inform: identification, growth, disease condition, reproductive state of the species and spatial distribution, habitat utilisation in the Solent. A good understanding of autecology and ecology is
essential.
The post holder will undertake all components of the data/experimental process (based in the Solent), but will work closely with the second project RF (based in the Institute of Cosmology and Gravitation) who will be automating the data methods. The SRA will also liaise with the project research team (Angling Spirit, Southern Inshore Fisheries & Conservation Authority, Navico Ltd), additional project partners mas well as local stakeholders to deliver activities. The successful candidate will have a PhD qualification in marine ecology and experience of ecosystem/fisheries ecology.
This post is funded by the DEFRA Fisheries Industry Science Partnership scheme (https://www.gov.uk/guidance/uk-seafood-fund-fisheries-industry-science- partnerships-scheme). A driving licence valid for the UK and willingness to work flexible hours are essential. The post is based at the Institute of Marine Sciences (IMS), which is an internationally renowned marine centre providing research (https://www.port.ac.uk/research/research-centres-and-groups/marine-
environmental-science-research-group) supporting over 200 staff, undergraduates and postgraduates, but with strong interdisciplinary links across the University e.g. Centre for Blue Governance (https://www.port.ac.uk/research/research-centres- and-groups/centre-for-blue-governance).
Applications must be made in accordance with the University of Portsmouth e-recruitment application process (https://port.engageats.co.uk/).The successful candidate will be working with Dr Ian Hendy (PI) and Dr Andrew Lundgren plus
partners. Informal enquiries may be made by contacting Dr Ian Hendy by email at ian.hendy@port.ac.uk.
