General
The background for Akademiaavtalen is to further develop the long-term research collaboration between UiB and Equinor. The purpose is to stimulate basic research and education within strategically important subject and competence areas covered by the agreement. The financial support awarded under the agreement shall preferably be used for basic research and research-based education. The current agreement, “Akademia IV”, was entered into in 2024 with an agreement period of five years, and has a limit of up to NOK 80 million.
The following announcements are planned for 2024:
- Field course
- Research project
- Mobility funds / Funds for professional development
Focus areas:
- Sea wind
- CCUS
- Generic underground knowledge
- Artificial intelligence AI
Applications are now open for category 2: Research project and category 3: Mobility funds.
Category 2 – Researcher project
Allocation of funds for research projects constitutes the largest individual allocations under the Academy Agreement, with a maximum allocation per project of NOK 5 million. Announcements within this application category only take place once during the agreement period.
Applications must be related to the strategic investment areas. Any other sources of funding in the applied for project must appear from the total budget for the project. Funding can be applied for research projects, including PhD, postdoctoral, researcher, Professor II positions, bridging funding and minor operating funds linked to the project.
Application criteria:
- Permanent employees at UiB in group A can apply.
- Applicants must be employed in a minimum 50% position at UiB.
- Projects that promote PhD scholars are given priority.
- Projects that have an interdisciplinary approach are prioritized.
- Links to other projects must be made visible in the application.
- Bridging funding for a professorship in geosciences will be assessed upon application.
- Projects that stimulate new collaborations are welcomed.

- The departments must rank the applications in the electronic application database by 14 June 2024.
- Departments that are allocated funds must by 31.12. every year ensure that the project accounts and budget for the following year are updated in the accounting system.
Category 3 – Mobility funds/Academic development
The mobility funds are intended to contribute to knowledge exchange and competence building beyond UiB, for example through participation in conferences, seminars, workshops etc. or by invitation of external guest researchers to UiB. The activity must be related to the strategic investment areas.
Allocation is given to the specific activity applied for, and the funds cannot, as a matter of principle, be redistributed. Unused residual funds must be returned.
Application criteria:
- Employees at UiB can apply for funds to cover costs in connection with travel to
conferences, seminars, workshops etc. related to the strategic investment areas. - Activities with presentation, either oral or poster (in this
priority order), will be prioritized. - Employees can apply for funding to invite guest researchers to UiB.
- Applications can be made for up to NOK. NOK 40,000 to cover expenses related to travel and accommodation.
- PhD candidates must have their supervisor’s approval to apply.
