Study plan changes for courses to be taught in spring 2025?

September is approaching and program board meetings for all the study programs at the Department of Biological Sciences. This means that the deadline for registering study plan changes for courses to be taught in spring 2025 is soon to come:• 2 September at 12.00: deadline for registering study plan changes for subjects included in the bachelor’s and master’s program in molecular biology.
• 10 September at 12.00: deadline for registering study plan changes for subjects included in the bachelor’s and master’s program in biology, the integrated master’s program in aquaculture and the integrated master’s program in fish health – aquamedicine.

Changes to courses can be entered in the Online Course Planner (EpN), unless otherwise agreed with the administrative person responsible for the course. Contact the administrative person responsible for the subject if anything is unclear.

Please note that major study plan changes, such as the creation or discontinuation of courses, also have a deadline of 2 or 10 September (depending on which study program the course belongs to). See the attached overview of what is defined as minor and major study plan changes [Norwegiang language]:

Adaptations to new study regulations [“studieforskrift”] and updated supplementary rules

The University of Bergen received new study regulations on 1 January 2024 and the faculty has accordingly adjusted its supplementary rules. Against the background of these changes, the faculty asks the institute to update the subject descriptions in relation to the following points:

  • Quality assurance of workload in subjects:
    • Quality assurance that the workload in the course corresponds to the number of credits. A credit makes up 1/60 of an entire academic year and involves approx. 25-30 working hours for students. UNIS has developed a useful resource that can be of help.
  • Estimate of the number of hours:
    • The course description must give an estimate of the number of hours for the teaching activities included in the course (lectures/active teaching/lab/field/etc.). This is filled in in the field “Forms of work and teaching”.
  • Compulsory teaching activity:
    • Compulsory teaching activities must be approved in order to be assessed in a subject. If the form of assessment in the subject is a written school examination, compulsory teaching activities cannot be included in the grade basis. In such a case, the form of assessment in the subject must be changed to, for example, portfolio assessment.
  • Folder assessment:
    • For courses with portfolio assessment, it must be stated whether it is possible to get an assessment in the semester without teaching or not.
  • Prioritization for admission to courses:
    • If a course has its own ranking rules for admission to the course, this must be stated in the course description.

Otherwise, see the attached course template from the faculty with comments on each individual field in the course description [Norwegian language]:
