Hi BIO,

My first week in the new position is almost over. Even though I knew about the September 1st start date long before the summer, it was a truly special feeling to come to work on Monday morning this week. The nameplate on the door was in place, and there was a beautiful flower from the administration team on my desk. During the day, I took a tour around BIO with Julie and had the chance to chat with many of you. It was very enjoyable, and I was again struck by how large this institute is – it took a few hours to complete the round!

I approach this job with a significant dose of humility, plenty of enthusiasm, and much excitement. BIO holds an important position within the faculty and at UiB, and we carry out an important societal mission that we must fulfill together. Research and teaching are our core activities, and the breadth and quality of the work done at BIO is impressive. For me, collaboration is key to continuing our success, and I will work to ensure that the strong collaborative culture at BIO is maintained and strengthened. To achieve this, we need to create more academic and social meeting places, so that we can come together to discuss biology and to forge new connections across the entire institute.

This fall, it will be important for me to talk with as many of you as possible, both individually and within the various units that make up BIO. I want to get to know the whole institute better, as well as the activities that are underway and those that are planned.

Thanks to Ørjan for his tireless efforts as leader of BIO over the past 8 years. These have been years with significant challenges, which he has handled superbly. I have a big job ahead of me to follow in his footsteps.

I look forward to what lies ahead and to tackling the tasks that await!

See you soon.

Have a great weekend!

Ståle
