The 3nd Bergen Bathysphere Science Symposium was held on 4-5 November 2025 at Marine Biological Station, Espegrend. This time it brought together 36 deep-sea scientists and professionals from various institutes and consultancies for hands-on workshops on QGIS (maps), BIIGLE (underwater footage), data management and platforms, standardization, cruise planning, as well as group discussions, and time to connect 🌊

Bathysphere is a voluntary deep-sea network of Norway-based deep-sea scientists and professionals who want to increase collaboration and knowledge-sharing across local institutes. Our aim is to foster collaboration, share insights into ongoing research, and discuss the latest developments and upcoming issues concerning Nordic and Arctic deep-sea environments.
We are three people from BIO involved in the steering committee (Postdocs Zoran Šargač, Hasan Arsin, and Petra Hribovšek), together with colleagues from GEO, IMR, and NORCE. This time we are also formalizing the Bathysphere initiative as an official entity, to make the community easier to coordinate.
BIO representatives Mari Heggernes Eilertsen and Christian Nilsson fascilitated important discussions on cruise planning and science communication, while David Rees ran a deep-sea linocut workshop (check out his work: david_rees_linocuts).

Spread the word to colleagues who may be interested in joining our deep-sea community, we welcome people with diverse backgrounds! Looking forward to future meetups!
P.S.: Thank you to the BIO volunteers who recently cleaned up Espegrend so we could enjoy the view from the dining room 😊
