Dean’s Brief

Colleagues from our faculty and across UiB took part in this year’s Arctic Frontiers conference in Tromsø, “Turn of the Tide” this week. With our strong polar research portfolio, we contributed to and helped organize several events. As a member of Arctic Frontiers, UiB plays an active role in a key arena that brings together science, policy, industry and Arctic communities to turn knowledge into action. The conference is an increasingly important meeting place for polar research and policymaking.

While in Tromsø, I also had the pleasure of participating in the opening of our new joint PhD school in mathematics, MATHESIS. Like the center itself, the PhD school is a collaborative initiative between UiT – The Arctic University of Norway and the University of Bergen, funded by the TMF Foundation Tromsø and the Research Council of Norway. Why the name Lie-Størmer? It reflects the legacy of Sophus Lie and Carl Størmer in Norwegian mathematics. You can read more about the history here: Mathematical Heritage | Lie-Størmer Center
