Takk for godt oppmøte på fredagens allmøte. Det var svært nyttig å få tatt en felles gjennomgang av økonomien på BIO. Det er et tema som vi har hatt på mange allmøter de siste årene, og vi ser at vi nok kommer til å ha det opp som tema en stund ennå. For 2025 ser året isolert sett veldig godt ut. Vi hadde riktignok en liten negativ balanse, men året viser at BIO har en drift der vi har kontroll på økonomien. Utfordringen framover blir å redusere underskuddet vi har med oss fra tidligere år.
For å mestre dette, er det flere faktorer som spiller inn. Fjoråret viste oss at vi må mobilisere på søknadsaktiviteten for ekstern finansiering (BOA). På BIO har vi alltid vært meget dyktige til å oppnå BOA midler. Fremdeles er det stor kompetanse og mange innsendte søknader med høy kvalitet. Vi kan likevel ikke tillate oss å hvile på våre laurbær. Dette er et løft vi må ta sammen, og jeg kommer til å kalle inn for samtaler og diskusjon med vitenskapelige for å finne løsninger og tiltak som kan motivere vider utvikling av dette arbeidet. Som også informert, kom det nylig økonomiske tiltak fra UiB på dette området. For arbeid med innsending av FRIPRO søknader i 2026 vil man få tildelt posisjoneringsmidler, og i forbindelse med søknader om «Marie Sklodowska-Curie – Postdoctoral Fellowships (MSCA-PF)» vil UiB også bidra med midler som vil styrke søknader til dette programmet.
I vår innsats for å redusere vårt underskudd er også kostnadskutt en viktig faktor. Som regnskap 2025 viste har vi et nøkternt kostnadsnivå når det gjelder driften av BIO, og vi skal unngå ytterligere innsparinger som går på bekostning av kvaliteten på det vi leverer innen forskning og undervisning. Vi må likevel kontinuerlig gå gjennom våre utgifter for å justere og omprioritere ettersom behovene endrer seg fra år til år. Som dere vet er arealreduksjon prosessen et virkemiddel som vil gi en betydelig effekt på våre husleie-kostnader. Nå ser vi at vi endelig er inne i avslutningsfasen av planlegging og utredningsfasen, og det er mange som har gjort en fantastisk innsats siden prosessen ble lansert i fjor vår. Før påske skal vi presentere planene for IDU (Informasjons- og drøftingsutvalget) på NT fakultetet og FU (Forhandlingsutvalget) UiB sentralt. Deretter satser vi på en avklaring fra EIA (Eiendomsavdelingen) og Universitetsledelsen, slik at en komplett plan kan sendes ut på høring på BIO denne våren.

Thank you for the good turnout at Friday’s general information meeting. It was very useful to go through BIO’s finances together. This has been a recurring topic at many of our general meetings in recent years, and it looks like it will continue to be on the agenda for some time. For 2025, the year looks very good on its own. We did have a small negative balance, but overall, the year shows that BIO’s operations are under financial control. The challenge going forward will be to reduce the deficit we are carrying from previous years.
To manage this, several factors come into play. Last year showed us that we need to step up our application activity for external funding (BOA). At BIO we have always been very skilled at securing BOA funding. There is still strong expertise and many high‑quality applications being submitted. Nevertheless, we cannot allow ourselves to rest on our laurels. This is an effort we must make together, and I will be calling in scientific staff for conversations and discussions to find solutions and measures that can motivate further development of this work. As mentioned, UiB recently introduced financial measures in this area. For work related to submitting FRIPRO applications in 2026, positioning funds will be allocated, and in connection with applications for “Marie Sklodowska‑Curie – Postdoctoral Fellowships (MSCA‑PF),” UiB will also contribute funding to strengthen applications to this program.
In our efforts to reduce our deficit, cost reductions are also an important factor. As the 2025 accounts showed, we have a modest cost level when it comes to BIO’s operations, and we should avoid further cuts that compromise the quality of our research and teaching. Still, we must continuously review our expenses to adjust and reprioritize as needs change from year to year. As you know, the area‑reduction process is a measure that will have a significant effect on our rental costs. We are finally in the last phase of planning and assessment, and many people have made a fantastic effort since the process was launched last spring. Before Easter, we will present the plans to the IDU (Information and Consultation Committee) at the Faculty of Science and to the FU (Negotiation Committee) centrally at UiB. After that, we hope for clarification from EIA (The Estate and Facilities Management division) and the University leadership, so that a complete plan can be sent out for consultation at BIO this spring.
