Kjære alle sammen,
Våren er endelig i anmarsj – selv om det akkurat nå faller vallesletter (!) utenfor kontorvinduet. Med våren kommer også et naturlig pusterom, påsken, etter en særdeles travel periode siden nyttår. Det merkes at vi står midt i mange ulike prosesser, og jeg er imponert over innsatsen alle viser.
I dag vil jeg særlig peke på en viktig fase for instituttet: arbeidet med BIOs strategi og handlingsplan for 2027–2031 er nettopp satt i gang. Dette blir en sentral prosess for oss der jeg ønsker å invitere til et bredt engasjement og medvirkning. Jeg ser frem til å utvikle retning, ambisjoner og prioriteringer i fellesskap i en tid med rammevilkår i endring og en usikker geopolitisk utvikling. De neste 5 årene blir viktige for BIO, og med en god strategi er målsetningen min at vi skal utvikle oss videre som et faglig sterkt og samfunnsrelevant institutt.
Vi står også foran en av årets mest betydningsfulle perioder for oss som utdanningsinstitutt: studentrekrutteringen. Søknadsfristen 15. april nærmer seg raskt. Det arbeidet dere allerede gjør, både i møte med elever, gjennom formidling, i undervisningen og i synliggjøringen av fagene våre, er helt avgjørende for å vise hva biovitenskap er og hvor attraktive studiene våre er.
En stor nyhet tikket nettopp inn: Regjeringen har nå valgt konsept for UiB Realfaghøyden og støtter UiBs plan om å modernisere Realfagbygget og Fysikkbygget, samt bygge et nytt avlastningsbygg. En femtedel av Norges samlede realfagskompetanse utdannes ved Universitetet i Bergen, og dette gir et robust grunnlag for å videreutvikle Norges viktigste satsing på realfag og teknologi. Gratulerer med nok en milepæl til alle som jobber med dette viktige prosjektet!
Jeg håper dere alle får anledning til å nyte påske dagene, enten den byr på fjellturer eller bypåske. Vi har en spennende tid fram til sommeren foran oss!

Dear all,
Spring is finally on its way, even though vallesletter (ask a local for the meaning 😊!) are currently falling outside my office window. With spring also comes a natural breather, Easter, after an exceptionally busy period since New Year. We are in the middle of many different processes, and I am impressed by the effort everyone is putting in.
Today, I would particularly like to highlight an important phase for the department: the work on BIO’s strategy and action plan for 2027–2031 has just begun. This will be a central process for us, and I would like to invite broad engagement and participation. I look forward to developing our direction, ambitions, and priorities together at a time when our framework conditions are changing and the geopolitical situation remains uncertain. The next five years will be important for BIO, and with a strong strategy, my goal is that we continue developing as an academically strong and socially relevant department.
We are also approaching one of the most significant periods of the year for us as an educational institution: student recruitment. The application deadline on April 15 is approaching fast. The work you already do, in meeting with prospective students, through outreach, in teaching, and in making our disciplines visible, is essential in showing what biosciences are and how attractive our study programs are.
A major piece of news just arrived: the Government has now chosen the concept for UiB Realfaghøyden and supports UiB’s plan to modernize the Realfagbygget and the Physics Building, as well as construct a new building. One fifth of Norway’s total STEM competence is educated at the University of Bergen, and this provides a strong foundation for further developing Norway’s most important investment in science and technology. Congratulations on yet another milestone to everyone working on this important project!
I hope you all can enjoy the Easter days, whether they bring mountain trips or a city Easter. We have an exciting period ahead of us as we move toward summer!
