This week, we were able to celebrate the establishment of a new Center for Quantum Research at the Faculty of Science and Technology. The center is funded by the University of Bergen and the Trond Mohn Foundation, with a total budget of NOK 80 million over five years. It is designed to foster extensive collaboration and will support research activities across several fields. The center will be led by Pinar Heggernes at the Department of Informatics.
- One example of the center’s potential impact is its contribution to earlier detection of cancer. Researchers at the Department of Physics and Technology, led by Justas Zalieckas, are developing quantum‑based sensors capable of detecting minute quantities of biomolecules in the blood, enabling the identification of cancer long before symptoms appear.
- Another important research direction from his group concerns safe navigation without relying on GPS. Quantum‑based navigation technologies can improve solutions for aviation, maritime transport, and underwater operations.
