Dean’s brief week 18 2026

Last Friday afternoon, one of the three annual doctoral promotion ceremonies at the University of Bergen took place. Our Faculty had 23 candidates who defended their theses between 1 December and 30 March. It is always inspiring and exciting to review the remarkable breadth of disciplines represented— I am both impressed and humbled. Each individual PhD degree is important because it contributes new, original knowledge within its field and because it enriches society with new insights.

This Tuesday the Christi Conference took place, addressing the topic “Boy power”. This annual conference is an important meeting place, and this year it highlighted how boys and young men seek belonging, meaning, and positive communities – while also challenging stereotypical ideas of masculinity. From the stage, we heard about both opportunities and challenges – from role models and school life to politics, protest, and destructive online environments.
