I participated as an invited speaker at the symposium “Reflections on Five Years of the Central Arctic Ocean Fisheries Agreement: Accomplishments and the Path Ahead”, held in Brussels on 15 June 2026. CAOFA is a landmark international treaty that prohibits commercial fishing in the high-seas portion of the Central Arctic Ocean. The 1-day symposium took place a day before the fifth CAOFA Conference of the Parties (COP) meeting hosted by the European Union in Brussels, Belgium and highlight innovative elements of this landmark agreement and showcasing the latest findings about our increasing knowledge of the rapidly changing Arctic Ocean. During the session on new discoveries in the Central Arctic Ocean, I presented recent scientific advances in understanding the role of sea ice in supporting Arctic marine ecosystems and biodiversity.
