Peter Manning: Linking Biodiversity, Ecosystem Services and Sustainability Transformations in the Kilimanjaro Social-Ecological System

Global biodiversity loss and land use change threaten the sustainability of the ecosystem services humanity depends upon. Addressing this challenge requires interdisciplinary research that identifies how biodiversity is linked to ecosystem services, how peoples demand for services affects their use of nature, and what social and economic barriers prevent sustainable use of nature. In this talk, I will present the large-scale Kilimanjaro Social-Ecological System (Kili-SES) project where we comprehensively characterized the social and ecological systems of Mount Kilimanjaro. I will highlight results showing how Kilimanjaro’s climate shapes its biodiversity and land use, and how these in turn drive the supply of multiple ecosystem services. I will also present synthetic work which integrates knowledge from across the whole system to identify options for land use and social management that could increase the sustainability of this iconic mountain region.

Lin Li: Metabolic Aging Signature of Mitochondrial OXPHOS

Mitochondria are the central energy and metabolic hub of the cell. Within these organelles, the oxidative phosphorylation system (OXPHOS) complexes play a central role in generating ATP from ADP to sustain cellular energy demands. Despite being among the longest-lived and essential protein assemblies, the mechanisms that enable these complexes to maintain functionality over extended periods remain insufficiently understood. By integrating dynamic metabolic labeling with high‑resolution mass spectrometry, I aim to determine the precise ages of OXPHOS proteins in metabolically active cells and to elucidate the molecular processes that shape age-related changes in this these essential complexes.
