- This week, the deans from the Norwegian mainland institutions are meeting at UNIS in Svalbard. Unsurprisingly, given the current geopolitical situation, one of the topics on the agenda is the transformation of the Svalbard community. Also on the agenda are the educational portfolio and a discussion of a new initiative currently being established: the Master of Polar Science.
- With our strong polar profile, UNIS is an important research partner that contributes to knowledge development in the High North. It is also a logistics platform that provides access to field equipment, vessels, storage facilities, safety systems, and local infrastructure. UNIS offers a unique opportunity for our students by giving them access to field-based education and research in the Arctic. Hands-on experience with Arctic systems and fieldwork under demanding conditions is an integral part of being a student at UNIS. Beyond practical field skills, this experience helps students develop systems thinking, risk awareness, and a deeper understanding of climate and Arctic issues. These are valuable competencies regardless of whether students ultimately pursue careers in polar research or in other fields.
