The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) is delighted to invite you to “Safeguarding the Seas: Ending overfishing on the high seas”, part of the Blue Deal Debate series, hosted by Chris Davies, the former chair of the European Parliament’s fisheries committee and organized by Rud Pedersen Public Affairs. This online webinar will explore the challenges faced in international governance of the oceans in guaranteeing a future for fish and the fishing industry, and will be held on 27 March 2023 from 12:00 to 13:30 CEST.
Agreement on the High Seas Treaty to protect marine biodiversity in areas outside national jurisdiction has been welcomed warmly, although it may take years before it comes into force. Yet in many places fishing is already guided by Regional Fisheries Management Organisations (RFMOs) responsible for managing iconic marine species including tuna, small pelagics and toothfish. While we’ve seen significant breakthroughs in international fisheries management, challenges still remain when it comes to reaching consensus on fishing sustainably.
By bringing together EU policymakers, industry stakeholders, and NGOs this event aims to create a forum of discussion around the challenges and opportunities experienced by RFMOs in achieving sustainable fisheries. Speakers will be invited to discuss how effective the current system is, particularly given accelerated climate change and the impacts this is having on the distribution of fish stocks. They will review how decisions are reached and where there is room for improvement so that lasting, long-term management plans for fish stocks across national jurisdictions can be realized.

Rohan Currey, Chief Science & Standards Officer, Marine Stewardship Council
Joost Paardekooper, Former Chief Negotiator, fisheries management international, European Commission
