Hi all,
The 2027 national budget included a major allocation to the Realfaghøyden project. This is far more than a financial commitment. It is a clear recognition of the importance of research and education in the natural sciences and technology, and a strong confirmation that the project is now moving towards realization. Congratulations to everyone at the Faculty of Science and Technology and at UiB who has worked tirelessly for many years to make Realfaghøyden a reality!
As Head of the Department of Biological Sciences, I am particularly pleased by this clear recognition of the importance of the natural sciences. Although BIO is located at Marineholmen and will not be directly housed in the new buildings, this investment will nevertheless bring substantial benefits to our research and students. Many of our students take courses across several departments, and the modernization of teaching facilities will benefit both students and staff throughout the faculty. For many students, the physical learning environment is an important factor when choosing where to study, and Realfaghøyden will strengthen UiB’s attractiveness to future students. This is especially important at a time when we are seeing increasing challenges in encouraging students to come to campus, while competition for students is becoming ever stronger, both nationally and internationally.
The research challenges of the future require interdisciplinary approaches, and the strengthening and development represented by Realfaghøyden will create new opportunities for collaboration across research environments throughout the faculty. Realfaghøyden is therefore much more than a building project; it is a project for the future of the Faculty of Science and Technology and UiB. At the Department of Biological Sciences, we look forward to being an active part of this development. An investment like Realfaghøyden creates new opportunities for all our students and researchers.
